When you live in Alaska, winter, like death and taxes, is inevitable. Even so, I think most of us feel fortunate to live here. Ruggedly beautiful, extreme in just about every way you could think of, sometimes dangerous and always idiosyncratic, there's no place like it. Add in the fact that we've been able to legally purchase weed for the last five years and what do you have? Paradise on ice.

To help beat the winter blues, this issue of Alaska Cannabist is filled with a variety of interesting stories about everyone's favorite plant. Freelancer extraordinaire Matt Buxton profiles Herbal Oufitters, the first Alaska marijuana retailer to open its doors to the public, David James reviews a book on marijuana etiquette, and I take you behind the scenes at the first ever comedy show in an on-site consumption cafe. Our new science writer, Garrison Collette, introduces us to delta-8, a cannabis alternative derived from hemp, and Buxton flexes his wonky muscle with a piece about the dramatic drop in cannabis-related arrests nationwide. All your usual favorites — budtenders, pot shots, gadgets, store names and weed reviews — are here as well.

So, find a blanket and a comfy spot on the couch, light one up and get cozy with Alaska Cannabist.

Until next time,
