Former U.S. Sen Mike Gravel of Alaska tweeted a snippy comment about Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris’ statement that she smoked marijuana in college.
Harris, a freshman senator from California, was asked on the nationally syndicated radio show “the Breakfast Club” on Feb. 11 if she had ever smoked marijuana.
Harris reportedly responded, "Half my family's from Jamaica. Are you kidding me?"
She said she smoked a joint in college. "And I did inhale,” she reportedly said with a laugh. "I just broke news."
Harris’ comments resurfaced this week when another Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, criticized two of his Democratic rivals for joking about marijuana use.
Gravel, who served in the Senate from 1969 to 1981, poked Harris in a Tuesday tweet.
#KillerKamalaHarris just came around to supporting marijuana legalization, even though she smoked it herself in college. Meanwhile, I've served as the CEO of two marijuana companies.#GravelGang#Gravel2020https://t.co/uj35vUUuKR— Mike Gravel (@MikeGravel) March 20, 2019
Gravel also tweeted Tuesday that he considering another run at the White House. He ran in 2008.
I am considering running in the 2020 Democratic primary. The goal will not be to win, but to bring a critique of American imperialism to the Democratic debate stage.
